The 1968 all new Econoline was delayed because of the 1967 strike by the UAW union. This effected the entire 1968 model line. Most 1968 models were carryovers from the 1967 model year. The remaining stock of 1967 models were sold until the 1968 model production resumed. The strike effected the new 1968 Econoline in that it's debut was delayed almost four months. The 1968 Econoline was released for sale to the public in January 1968.Instead of calling it a 1968 or 1968.5 model,Ford decided to call it the 1969 model. The pre 1969 1969 Econolines can be identified by their build date and their VIN block. The following information is obtained from the 1968 Ford Truck Data Book, fourth mailing,January 29,1968.When I have time I will post the codes from the 1969 Ford Truck Data Book. These codes changed from year to year as option were added or deleted.Trying to use them for anything other then 1969s may get you wrong answers. 2012_09_19_21_24_10-009_zpsb38c2d43.jpgSeries

DSO

DSO stands for District Sales Office.District Sales Offices were go betweens for the Ford dealers and factories. When the Ford dealer placed an order it went to the District Sales Office and then to the Factory. Some people believe that it Stands for Dearborn Special Order but that is something else. All Econolines and Club Wagons will have a two digit DSO code for the area that it was ordered. Some Econolines and Club Wagons will have a four digit number after the two digit numbers. This is a Special Order reference number. It was the Special Order order number placed by the dealer. The order number placed by the dealer could have had one Special Order option or more.It was just a reference number to the Special Order order placed by the dealer. It was used by the factory, dealer and owner as a referance to the Special Order parts on the van.The number can not be broken down and does not mean anything except as a reference to the Special Order order.Ford only kept these records for a few years. They no longer exist and Ford has no record as to what was Special Ordered for your van.The Data Tag below has a Special Order DSO. Hi, I had some questions about vins. according to info on this site my vin e14ahe51362 would be a 1969 cargo van with a 240 six built in lorain in dec 1968.the other codes for wheelbase, color, model, body trans and axle are 105,r,e141,3189 g 11 this I would read as 105' wheelbase, color green, cargo van auto trans with 3.50 axle. I have seen pictures from the original owner when the van was 2 months old it has never been green, the barn doors in the rear and side all have windows and the transmission is a standard three on the tree, not an automatic.I was told my body style was called a display van. Please help as i'm a little confused .Love this site .I've had this van since 1995 and its time for a repaint and total refresh.thank you

It is possible that there are two different colors for that code. There were some Canada only colors that were different colors but used the same code.Even though they were Canada colors there were some vans that were ordered and delivered in the U.S. with the Canada color.Sometimes the VIN is stamped with the wrong code.Is your van a brown color?

As for the other stuff,it's possible that you have the wrong VIN plate on your van. This happens from time to time. The VIN is stamped on a few places on the body. You should check to see if the VINs match. It's possible that the wrong VIN plate was put on your door or that the door was replaced at one time.

Windows on the front and rear doors are a common option on cargo vans.A Display van has windows all the way down the right side of the van.

Hello Hoofbeats !

I have some questions too.

As you know, I´ve bought that wonderful Eco on Ebay, and the gray Vin Plate at the door says :

17 for the rear axle, and 47 for DSO

which I can´t find in the list above.

Any idea ?

Cheers

Joerg

I need to update the VIN codes.I haven't had time. The 1969 Econolines were made for 19 months. There were three or four VIN updates/changes during the extended model year.I started with the earliest codes. Some time during the real 1969 model year the code for Cincinnati was changed to 47 from 27.

As for the 17 Axle Code, it is for a 3300lbs axle with a 3.25 gear ratio. It wasn't an option for the early 1969 Econolines. So it doesn't so up on the first version of the VIN codes.

I´ve started to get her to the inspections and therefor you need a data sheet in Germany......and there is only one place to get.....the TüV.......... 180€.....=  240USD.......and these f...ers tell me, there must be something wrong with the VIN.......they can not find a data sheet......I mailed them a complete decoding of the VIN Plate.......and I`m still wayting .......

That´s German, folks.......

I’m not sure exactly what they are looking for.  Would a ‘build sheet’ be the same thing?
From what I can tell a ‘Marti Report’ probably wouldn’t be what they want.

In Germany we have a institution called "TüV.".....a technical supervision of all stuff you will ever drive or ride and registered on public roads......but they failed by reading numbers in a VIN.....unbelievable.....so they could not find the right  data sheet for my van.....now they found it and the process will go ahead.......

I hate people acting like good but did not know a shit of anything......

sorry.....I´m pissed off

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you too! The Germans are sticklers for details and exactness, but often if they don't understand something or get something wrong, they won't admit it. This is particularly true for those in power. I hope everything works out for your inspection! I'm wondering on what basis they determined that your VIN was incorrect in the first place.
