Full Version: Replacement body panels. Pictures?

Hey all, I've gone through most every post on here and can't find the information I need. I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed and pinned!

I'm still trying to fix up my 1989 E-150 Club Wagon. All these steel replacement parts catalogs are making me insane with the numbered parts drawings. Most of the panels and pieces I need have multiple options in the drawings but it's nearly impossible to tell what panel to order and if the part will really replace the rusted area. I need to replace many lower body panels and the area under the rear doors & behind the bumper where the frame mounts, but the panel in the drawing looks like a piece of C channel.

Does ANYONE have pictures of these parts and opinions on how good they really are? I am talking about the parts from Mill (rustrepair.com). I'm also seriously planning on ordering up fiberglass parts from Showcars. I'd like to cover the fender & lower body rot repair with a set of fender flares with the front spoiler & side skirts as well as a rear roof spoiler. A glass hood or dress up may also be in the plans. I'd almost duplicate the van drawing on the bottom of the page except for the visor. I may consider some sort of sunroof too. Any thoughts & pictures from guys with experience will be a huge help.

Thanks,
Bill

To replace the metal beneath the front doors, you need rocker panels.. The mill supply site has them listed, but doesn't show them in the picture. They're number 40 on the list. I just checked the "sherman's" website, and they do have actual pictures of the panels they sell. That might help you a bit more. Just click on the name of each part.

FWIW, I think all of the companies are about the same level of quality as far as repair panels go. They'll most likely need a bit of massaging to get them to fit right, and the bends aren't always as crisp as they should be.

I'm not ignoring your and anyone Else's messages, When I moved over to my new Laptop & Server I lost my password and
could not gain access. So I re-rigistered and am now HotRod1. I got a message from 69 tonight and it led me to an error message just like yours did and said the message did not exist, I assume that is because I could not log in under the old user name. So try sending it to me again to either my yahoo or ruraltel assress.

Thanks
Ron

I don't know anything about where you are talking about ordering from but I bought a replacement panel for my 86 E-150
from JC Whitney and it fit like a glove. All I had to do was measure my wheelbase and order accordingly. I also have one for my 84 F-150 sitting in my garage from them for the right cab corner and it looks like it's going to be a perfect fit.

Roger,
Thanks for the link to Sherman. It was a help and I may order some parts from them to thank them for bothering to show pictures even if several pieces don't have a picture to go along with the listing. That rear "under door" panel still looks like C channel but I guess it's got to be better than what I have now. http://store.shermanparts.com/images/skus/562-68.jpg

Ron,
I don't have trouble figuring out a few of the more obvious panels, but when the part that needs to be fixed is mostly rusted away, the catalog picture being a drawing isn't much of a help. In this era of digital cameras and the internet, I'd hoped that somebody would have decent quality pictures of the panels that they sell. I've had some very nice panels for my 75 Super Beetle but those parts were well drawn and really didn't have many options. These van drawings are barely good enough when it comes to what size rear corner panel to order or how far up the lower body panel will really reach.

I guess I was hoping somebody took pictures of their 74-91 van during rebuild or had an online catalog of decent quality pictures and could show what the panels looked like.

Thanks and still hoping for more.

I see what you mean, That pic is not very good for sure. You might check out JC Whitney's though If I remember right the stuff on that site was quite a bit better than what you have here. Then maybe I ordered out of a Catalog and am just remembering Wrong, You Know Us OLD people do that sometimes.
