Full Version: Should I rebuild?

I've got a good low mileage 302 out of a 74 E200. It seemd to run well but it was a junker van.

Should I rebuild it before putting it in the van or tear it down and inspect?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Randy,, I'd at least do a leak down test on it. If all seems good there,, I'd maybe replace the oil pump. Only because it's a heck of a lot easier to do that before you drop the engine in.

I am big on rebuilding. Since you have gone this far, you might as well go all the way. This way too you have something you like.

Hi Randy,

If you're going to do what Roger stated, then I would also change out the oil pump drive shaft and timing chain set. But what year are the heads? If they are 74's they could have hardened exhaust seats.

i like to tear down an old motor to the short block. that way you can get a look at the bores. the heads will have hardened seats but you can get good look at them if they are off. replace oil pump, water pump and timing set for sure. cam and lifters would be a good time to up grade. cheapest gasket sets i have found are on ebay. good luck.
